Casting Call for Actors in “Hoi Polloi” in New York

The casting directors at Musicals Tonight! Inc. are looking for a number of roles for the play Hoi Polloi scheduled to be held later this year. Mel Miller will produce the play, while the music director will be David Bishop. Music and lyrics has been composed by Noel Coward. The rehearsals of the play will begin on October 17th while the show will be played from November 1st to 13th this year.

The play Hoi Polloi represents the world premiere of an unproduced work of the English composer, playwright, actor, director, and singer, who was known for his flamboyance, wit and what Time magazine dubbed “a sense of personal style, a combination of cheek and chic, pose and poise”.

Audition date of the theatrical performance will be held on September 16, 2016 from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm at the Actors’ Equity New York Audition Center. You will have to prepare a brief theatrical songs from the old era i.e. 1930s, 40s, 50s, and 60s, for instance something by Rodgers & Hart and Gershwin, and probably funny. It is important to bring sheet music as well as resume and picture, stapled together.

SYNOPSIS

Hoi Polloi is a classic theatrical play that is being revived today through a team of talented cast, producers, and directors. The play is full of lively and charming characters. A young London girl named Pinkie a sailor named Harry who is on-leave meet in Covent Garden Market while strolling in Hyde Park.

Pinkie takes Harry home to meet her family. Later the newlyweds have been invited to a fancy party. Harry initially refuses to attend the party, and they quarrel. But in the end he relents and they dress up and go. The next morning Harry leaves to join the camp, and promises to come back, but she will have to wait for him for a long time.

About the character: Alfie Macklin is younger sister of Pinkie. He is also a close confidant of her sister.

Doreen Macklin

  • Baritone-type vocally.

About the character: Doreen Macklin is younger brother of Pinkie. He has a boyish persona, and likes to have fun all the time.

Barmey Flo

  • Female, any ethnicity
  • Any age
  • Should be a good singer.

About the character: Barmey Flo is a local flower seller with a good heart. She is down-to-earth and motherly with a pleasant personality.

Mr Capper

  • Male, any ethnicity
  • Any age
  • Should have a good voice.

About the character: Mr Capper is a local fruit and vegetable seller. He is grounded, but is full of energy and warmth.

Charlie Macklin

  • Female, any ethnicity
  • Age in the 20s
  • Should be a great singer and dancer
  • Alfred Doolittle-type vocally.

About the character: Charlie Macklin is the father of Pinkie. He is along with his wife Fanny is an ex-Vaudeville performer.

Fanny Macklin

  • Female, any ethnicity
  • Great singer and mover
  • Tessie O’Shea-type vocally.

About the character: Fanny Macklin is mother of Pinkie in the play. She is ex-Vaudeville performer, but still has it in her after all those years.

Julian Curtis

  • Male, any ethnicity
  • Age in the 20s and 30s
  • Should be a great singer and dancer
  • Must be adept with British accent
  • Legit baritone / tenor.

About the character: Julian Curtis is an upscale and urbane newlywed of Linda. He speaks with a British accent.

Linda Curtis

About the character: Linda Curtis is an upscale and urbane newlywed of Julian. She speaks with a British accent.

About the role: Ensemble Men/Women will have to play different roles in the play.

Three Theatrical Dames (Laura; Rosie; Margaret)

About the role: Three Theatrical Dames include Laura; Rosie; and Margaret. They are middle aged sisters who are funny and lively of character.

*The producers of the play are open to the possibility of the roles being played by men in drag.
